…as the debate over NBC Threatens Broadcast Media continues to unfold, major media stakeholders have pushed back.

Abuja, Nigeria — The iNews Times | The controversy surrounding NBC Threatens Broadcast Media has triggered a nationwide debate over press freedom, democratic accountability and regulatory power as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) https://www.nbc.gov.ng has placed radio and television stations across the country on formal notice, warning of strict enforcement of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code over what it described as declining professionalism and rising ethical breaches in political programming.

The directive, which comes at a politically sensitive time, has drawn strong reactions from media unions, editors and political actors who argue that while professionalism is essential, regulatory overreach could constrict Nigeria’s democratic space.

In its formal notice to broadcasters, the NBC expressed concern over what it termed a sustained pattern of ethical and professional violations, particularly in news, current affairs and political analysis programmes. According to the Commission, some broadcast platforms are increasingly being used in ways that undermine their core responsibility to inform the public accurately, fairly and professionally.

The Commission warned that as Nigeria gradually moves closer to the 2027 elections, it will enforce “strict and uncompromised compliance” with the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. It specifically highlighted provisions relating to fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, incitement and respect for constitutional authorities.

By stating clearly that infractions in these areas would attract sanctions, the regulator has effectively put the industry on alert. The NBC emphasised that editorial responsibility is non-transferable and that broadcasters bear ultimate liability for all content transmitted on their platforms, including live interviews and political discussions.

A major issue identified by the NBC is what it described as a professionalism “crisis” among programme anchors and presenters. The Commission observed instances where presenters allegedly inject personal opinions into discussions, fail to give equitable representation to opposing viewpoints or allow programmes to tilt in favour of particular interests.

Such conduct, the NBC argued, violates explicit provisions of the Broadcasting Code that demand neutrality and fairness in the handling of issues of public interest. It warned that anchors who express personal opinions as fact, intimidate guests or deny fair hearing could be deemed to have committed a Class B breach, potentially attracting regulatory penalties.

The Commission also criticised what it described as the misuse of broadcast platforms by politicians across party lines. According to the NBC, some political actors exploit radio and television programmes to disseminate inflammatory narratives capable of inciting public disorder or deepening communal divisions.

With political campaigns expected to intensify in the coming months, the regulator warned that hate speech and inciting rhetoric pose a threat not only to broadcasting standards but to national stability itself.

However, as the debate over NBC Threatens Broadcast Media continues to unfold, major media stakeholders have pushed back strongly against the directive.

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) described the advisory as a veiled attempt to institutionalise censorship. In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Achike Chude, the union said it viewed the NBC’s notice with grave concern and disappointment, warning that vague regulatory language could encourage self-censorship among journalists.

The NUJ argued that journalism, particularly in the sphere of political analysis, requires robust engagement and contextual interpretation. Stripping presenters of analytical depth, it maintained, risks reducing the Nigerian media to a passive conduit rather than a watchdog of democracy.

The union also reminded the Commission that Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, including the right to hold opinions and impart information without interference.

Similarly, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) warned that the NBC’s broadly worded directive could be open to subjective interpretation. The Guild acknowledged the importance of professionalism but cautioned that positioning a regulator as the sole arbiter of what constitutes appropriate scrutiny could open the door to potential abuse.

According to the editors, journalism is designed to ask probing questions, challenge inconsistencies and demand clarity in the public interest. Democracy, they stressed, thrives on bold and responsible interrogation of power, not timid compliance.

The controversy deepened further when former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, weighed in on the matter. Writing on his verified X handle, he described the development as troubling, especially at a time when democratic institutions should be strengthened rather than constrained.

He emphasised that the media remains a vital pillar of democracy and warned that attempts to moderate opinions or intimidate journalists under the guise of regulation could weaken Nigeria’s fragile democratic framework.

Obi linked the issue to broader national concerns, noting that rising insecurity, youth frustration and economic hardship should command greater governmental focus than controlling media narratives.

“Nigeria does not need stronger control. Nigeria needs stronger institutions,” he declared.

At the heart of the debate over NBC Threatens Broadcast Media lies a delicate democratic balancing act. On one hand, regulators are tasked with preventing hate speech, misinformation and incitement that could destabilise society. On the other hand, excessive or ambiguously enforced regulation risks undermining press freedom and shrinking civic space.

As Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle, the tension between regulatory oversight and democratic openness is likely to intensify. Historically, media freedom has played a critical role in shaping electoral accountability, exposing corruption and informing voter decisions.

For many observers, the critical question is not whether broadcasting standards should be upheld, few dispute that necessity, but whether enforcement will be impartial, transparent and insulated from political influence.

What is clear is that the warning has set the tone for what could become a defining confrontation between regulatory authority and press freedom in the lead-up to 2027.

The iNews Times will continue to monitor developments surrounding NBC Threatens Broadcast Media, providing in-depth analysis on how the evolving situation may shape Nigeria’s media landscape and democratic future.
