BENUE, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| A set of newborn twins, a boy and a girl, have been found abandoned in a bush in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State.
The infants were rescued on Saturday, April 25, 2026, by members of the Local Government Area (LGA) Task Force during a routine sanitation exercise in Vandeikya Township.
The babies were reportedly abandoned at a bushy slope in Mbaaji, Ningev Council Ward, an area locally referred to as “Wangbeen Jor” in the Tiv language.
Chairman of the task force, Chief Daniel Orhembega, confirmed the incident, explaining that the discovery was made while operatives were on their way to dispose of refuse.
He said one of the officers heard the sound of a baby crying, prompting the team to move toward the direction of the noise. On arrival, they found the newborn twins wrapped in freshly plucked leaves, alongside a placenta and a gown believed to belong to their mother.
According to him, one of the babies was crying while the other was found asleep at the time of rescue.
The infants were immediately evacuated and handed over to nearby medical personnel for urgent attention due to their fragile condition.
They have since been transferred to the care of the Vandeikya Local Government Welfare Department for further protection and support.
The Local Government Chairman has appealed to residents to assist authorities with any information that could help identify and locate the mother of the abandoned twins.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment are expected to continue.
