Rescue teams race against time after Elite Five Star Lodge caves in late Sunday night beside busy filling station.

OKO, ANAMBRA STATE – The iNews Times | Anambra hostel collapse has left an unconfirmed number of people, mostly students, trapped under the rubble of a three-storey building that gave way late on Sunday night in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area.

The structure, known as Elite Five Star Lodge and located beside Tonimas Filling Station, crumbled without warning, prompting an immediate multi-agency response. Some injured victims have already been pulled from the debris and taken to a nearby hospital, but the full scale of the tragedy remains unclear as rescue efforts continue into Monday.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

Student hostels and private lodges across Anambra State have long operated under pressure from rapid enrolment growth at tertiary institutions and limited regulated accommodation. Many of these buildings, often constructed quickly to meet demand, face questions about structural integrity, especially during the rainy season when soil and foundation stress increase.

Previous collapses in the South-East have highlighted gaps in building approval processes, routine inspections, and enforcement of safety codes. The Elite Five Star Lodge sat in a busy commercial corridor, raising additional concerns about the proximity of residential student housing to heavy traffic and fuel stations. The iNews Times notes that such locations often combine high occupancy with limited emergency access routes.

Key Developments

The building collapsed late on Sunday, 26 July 2026. Police received a distress call and quickly mobilised a joint security team that included officers from the Anambra State Police Command, the State Fire Service, and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

According to Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the team secured the area to prevent further danger and began coordinated rescue operations. Some injured occupants were extracted from the rubble and evacuated to a hospital in Oko, where they are receiving treatment. Officials confirmed that other persons may still be trapped, but the exact number of casualties or people affected could not yet be verified.

Residents and passers-by were urged to stay clear of the site so emergency responders could work without obstruction.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Tochukwu Ikenga, speaking for the Anambra State Police Command, said: “Anambra State Police-led joint security team assures ongoing rescue operations following the late-night incident on Sunday 26th July 2026, involving the collapse of a three-storey building known as Elite Five Star Lodge, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, Amokpala, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of the State. The incident resulted in some occupants being trapped beneath the rubble.”

He added that the Police, Fire Service and SEMA responded promptly, that injured victims had been taken to hospital, and that the public should remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and stay away from the scene. “Further updates will be communicated as more verified information becomes available,” Ikenga stated.

No official comment has yet been released by the building owners or local government authorities on the cause of the collapse.

Implications

The Anambra hostel collapse once again throws a harsh light on the safety of student accommodation in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding tertiary education sector. Many young people live in privately owned multi-storey lodges that operate with minimal oversight. A failure of this kind risks not only immediate loss of life but also long-term damage to public confidence in regulatory systems.

Beyond the human cost, such incidents carry economic consequences for families who invest heavily in their children’s education and for local communities that depend on student spending. The location beside a filling station also raises questions about secondary hazards that could have complicated rescue work.

What Happens Next

Rescue operations remain the immediate priority. Officials are expected to release verified casualty figures once the site is fully searched and stabilised. Structural engineers and relevant state agencies will likely begin assessing the cause of the failure, including possible issues with design, materials, or maintenance.

Local authorities may face renewed pressure to intensify building inspections across Orumba North and other student-dense areas of Anambra. The iNews Times will continue to monitor official updates and any statements from the building’s operators or the state government.

Conclusion

The sudden collapse of Elite Five Star Lodge has turned a quiet Sunday night into a tense race to save lives. As emergency teams dig through the rubble, the incident serves as a stark reminder that the safety of students living away from home cannot be taken for granted. Swift, transparent investigation and stronger enforcement of building standards will determine whether this tragedy becomes a catalyst for lasting change or another forgotten entry in Nigeria’s long list of preventable structural failures.
