ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN) has threatened to disrupt the forthcoming national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over alleged unpaid debts owed to its members by the Federal Government.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday as contractors resumed protests, AICAN National President, Jackson Nwosu, issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding the immediate release of N150bn, part of commitments reportedly made by the government following earlier demonstrations between December 2025 and January 2026.
According to Nwosu, only N21bn has been disbursed so far, leaving over N1tn in outstanding liabilities to contractors nationwide.
He warned that failure to meet the demand within the stipulated timeframe could disrupt the APC convention, as members plan to stage a protest at the venue to draw national attention to their grievances.
Nwosu added that discussions were ongoing with officials of the Ministry of Finance, expressing hope that payments would be made directly to contractors.
Also speaking, AICAN National Secretary, Babatunde Seun, decried what he described as persistent delays and broken promises by the Federal Government.
He attributed part of the delay to the extension of the 2024 budget implementation timeline from December 2025 to March 2026, noting that no fresh payments had been made since January.
Seun further claimed that the situation had taken a toll on members, alleging that one contractor died after being unable to afford medical treatment despite being owed over N100m.
He also opposed moves to channel payments through the Debt Management Office, insisting the association would resist such a process.
The association maintained that while its immediate demand stands at N150bn, the total outstanding debt owed to indigenous contractors is estimated at about N1.15tn.
The APC national convention is scheduled to hold from March 27 to 28, 2026, in Abuja.
