ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to arraign former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday over alleged corruption charges.
The move comes amid growing pressure from various stakeholders, including the African Democratic Congress, which had called for either his immediate release or formal arraignment. They argued that his continued detention without charges violates constitutional provisions.
The Muslim Rights Concern also criticised the prolonged detention by security agencies, while members of El-Rufai’s family expressed concern and urged authorities to bring him before a competent court.
In a statement issued on Monday by ICPC Head of Media and Public Communications, John Odey, it was disclosed that El-Rufai, alongside Joel Adoga, would be arraigned in suit number FHC/KD/73/2026 at the Federal High Court, Kaduna Judicial Division. The charges reportedly include the conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.
The ICPC further revealed that a separate case, marked KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, has been filed against El-Rufai and Amadu Sule (LEDA) at a Kaduna State High Court. The charges in that case include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
Both cases were filed on March 18, 2026, with the date for the state court arraignment to be announced later.
ICPC stated that El-Rufai has been duly served and reaffirmed its commitment to due process and the rule of law.
Reports indicate that El-Rufai was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after honouring its invitation on February 16. Although he was granted bail on February 18, he was subsequently taken into custody by the ICPC, where he has remained amid repeated calls for his arraignment.
