Anambra Road Crashes: FRSC Moves After 11 Die at Agulu

…to curb rising wave of Anambra road crashes, particularly at identified black spots.

AGULU, ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA — The iNews Times | The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has launched an urgent intervention following a spike in Anambra road crashes that claimed 11 lives within one month at a black spot near Agulu Lake in Anaocha Local Government Area.

The Sector Commander, Bridget Asekauno, led a joint road audit to the troubled section after four female burial returnees lost their lives in a crash at the same location on Friday night.

According to Asekauno, the visit was prompted by four consecutive accidents recorded at the spot in the last month, all contributing to the rising fatalities.

‘Avoidable Crashes Must End’ — FRSC

The Sector Commander expressed concern over the repeated incidents, describing many of the crashes as avoidable.

She noted that while structural defects in the road design may have contributed to the accidents, reckless driving by some motorists worsened the situation.

The audit, she explained, aligns with the Corps’ strategic goal of reducing road traffic crashes and strengthening stakeholder engagement to tackle persistent Anambra road crashes.

Asekauno commiserated with families of the victims and members of the community, identifying areas requiring urgent infrastructure upgrades, including installation of barricades as temporary safety measures pending permanent reconstruction.

Lawmaker, Agencies Order Immediate Action

Member representing Anaocha Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi, condemned the repeated tragedies and sympathised with affected families.

She pledged to liaise with the State Government to explore possible redesign of the road and adjoining lake area to prevent further loss of lives.

Also speaking, the Director of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Authority, Engr. Okonkwo Emeka-Konti, ordered the immediate installation of recommended road furniture, directing that work commence without delay.

Similarly, the representative of the Commissioner for Works and Chief Civil Engineer at the Ministry of Works, Stanley Enike, assured that implementation of decisions reached during the audit would begin immediately. This includes barricading the road and installing rumble strips as interim measures pending expansion of the bridge.

Community leaders commended the FRSC for its swift response and continued efforts to enhance safety along the corridor.

The renewed multi-agency response signals a coordinated push to curb the rising wave of Anambra road crashes, particularly at identified black spots across the state.
