‎CBN Slashes Interest Rate to 26.5%

‎…The latest CBN adjustment follows a similar 50-basis-point reduction in September 2025,

‎‎ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria has lowered the benchmark interest rate to 26.5 per cent.

‎The decision marks the second rate cut by the MPC under the current leadership of the apex bank.

‎Governor Olayemi Cardoso announced the move on Tuesday at the conclusion of the committee’s 304th meeting in Abuja.

‎According to Cardoso, “The Committee resolved to cut the monetary policy rate by 50 basis points to 26.5 per cent.”

‎The latest adjustment follows a similar 50-basis-point reduction in September 2025, after which the rate was retained at the November 2025 MPC meeting.

‎It was reported that the rate cut comes amid a moderation in Nigeria’s headline inflation, which eased to 15.10 per cent in January 2026.
