…when he provided false information at the EFCC’s Bank Fraud Unit in Maiduguri in a bid to act as a surety.
BORONO, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has convicted and sentenced Abdulrahman Mallam to six months imprisonment for providing false information to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the anti-graft agency, Mallam was arraigned on April 2, 2026, by the EFCC’s Maiduguri Zonal Directorate on a one-count charge bordering on making false statements. The charge detailed how he allegedly misrepresented himself as a civil servant and provided misleading information while attempting to stand as a surety.
He pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him. Following his plea, prosecution counsel S.O. Saka urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly, while defence counsel A.B. Dikwa appealed for leniency, citing the defendant’s remorse.
Justice Kumaliya subsequently convicted and sentenced him to six months imprisonment, with an option of a ₦50,000 fine.
The court heard that Mallam’s ordeal began when he provided false information at the EFCC’s Bank Fraud Unit in Maiduguri in a bid to act as a surety.
In a separate development, the EFCC also arraigned Ibrahim Mohammed Tungushe before the same court on charges related to alleged fraud involving ₦1.25 million.
According to the charge, Tungushe allegedly misappropriated funds from the sale of 100 cartons of instant noodles belonging to one Bukar Babakura after receiving the goods under the pretext of supplying them to customers and remitting payment within 24 hours.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Prosecution counsel S.O. Saka requested a trial date and asked the court to remand him in custody.
Justice Kumaliya adjourned the case until April 16, 2026, for the commencement of trial and ordered that Tungushe be remanded at the Maiduguri Maximum Custodial Centre.
Authorities said his arrest followed a complaint that he failed to either deliver the goods or remit payment after receiving them.
