MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM – The iNews Times | A medical tribunal in the United Kingdom has heard shocking revelations about a senior anaesthetist who abandoned a patient under anaesthesia during a surgical operation to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in a nearby room.
Dr. Suhail Anjum, a consultant anaesthetist at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, admitted to the misconduct during a hearing convened by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS). He had stepped away from an ongoing surgery under the pretext of taking a “comfort break,” only to be discovered in a compromising situation with a nurse, identified as Nurse C, in an adjacent theatre.
According to Andrew Molloy, counsel for the General Medical Council (GMC), the doctor left a colleague in charge of monitoring the sedated patient while he engaged in the act. The incident came to light when another staff member inadvertently walked in on the pair and subsequently reported the misconduct.
Remarkably, the patient remained stable throughout Dr. Anjum’s absence, and the operation was concluded without further complications. However, the GMC emphasized the gravity of the breach in professional ethics and patient care standards.
Dr. Anjum has since admitted full responsibility and expressed deep remorse.
“It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame,” he told the tribunal. “I offer my sincere apologies to everyone affected, and I want the chance to put this right.”
He attributed the lapse in judgment to a “particularly stressful period” in his personal life, though the tribunal is still deliberating on the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken.
As proceedings continue, the medical community is watching closely, with many questioning how such a serious breach of protocol could occur in an environment designed to uphold the highest standards of patient safety.
