‎Egbetokun removed as IG by Tinubu

‎…Tinubu directed Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

‎‎ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police.

‎Presidential aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to our correspondents on Tuesday.

‎According to sources, Tinubu directed Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

‎“Yes, Egbetokun is out,” one of the aides said when asked to comment on the development.

‎“A formal statement is currently being prepared. An official announcement will be made shortly,” another aide added.

‎Attempts to get a reaction from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to him were not returned.

‎Similarly, the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, did not respond to calls seeking confirmation.

‎Sources within the police hierarchy indicated that a successor may already have been identified, although no official statement had been issued as of the time of filing this report.

‎One senior officer, who requested anonymity, revealed that Tunji Disu had been contacted regarding the position.

‎“He has been contacted, but we are awaiting official confirmation, which is expected later today,” the source said.

‎Egbetokun was appointed on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu.

‎In 2024, his continued stay in office generated controversy after he attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4. However, his tenure was extended following an amendment to the Police Act.
