ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Former counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has confirmed that he returned the $19,000 that was reportedly paid into his bank account in error by the group’s leadership at the start of Kanu’s trial.
In a press statement issued to journalists on Tuesday and titled “Important Clarification to Discerning Minds,” Ifeanyi Ejiofor said it had become necessary to set the record straight and present the facts in the interest of truth.
According to him, the payment was promptly recovered after Nnamdi Kanu formally notified him that the money had been transferred mistakenly and not for the purpose it was later alleged to represent.
He explained that, in line with Kanu’s directive, the funds were returned the same day they were credited to his account. Ejiofor added that Kanu provided the account details of a proxy to receive the money, after which he immediately transferred the full amount back.
Ejiofor further stated that the instruction to retrieve the funds came directly from Kanu through a communication he still possesses. To ensure transparency, he said he would soon make public the transaction receipt confirming the refund, along with the account details of the proxy who received the returned funds, noting that the documents would clearly verify the transaction.
