EDO, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The family of a student linked to a viral bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City has publicly apologised for their son’s behaviour.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Tim Asoro, the family said they were shocked and embarrassed after seeing the video, which showed two male students beating and kicking another student who was lying on the ground while a third student filmed the assault.
They described watching the video as one of the most painful experiences they have faced as parents.
“Seeing the video has been extremely distressing and heartbreaking for us. We are deeply ashamed that our child was involved in behaviour that caused pain and suffering to another young student,” the statement read.
They offered a direct apology to the victim, his family, and the entire school community.
“To the student who was hurt, we sincerely apologise from the depths of our hearts. No child deserves to be treated that way. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” they said.
They noted that medical reports indicate the victim is physically fine but emphasised that the emotional impact of the incident remains a serious concern.
“While this gives us some relief as parents, it does not lessen the gravity of what happened or the emotional distress the incident may have caused,” the family added.
They also apologised to the management, teachers, parents, and students of Igbinedion Education Centre, saying they were deeply saddened that their son’s actions had brought negative attention and distress to the school community.
According to the family, they have had serious conversations with their son, who has expressed regret and acknowledged the consequences of his behaviour. They also recognised the disciplinary measures taken by the school and expressed hope for healing.
“He has shown genuine remorse and understands that his actions have consequences not only for himself but also for another child, the school, and our entire family.
“We are already taking steps to ensure he receives proper guidance, counselling, and moral support to help him reflect, grow, and become a more compassionate young person,” the statement added.
They concluded by again apologising to the victim, his family, and the school community, expressing hope that healing would come to everyone affected by the incident.
