…Amucheazi criticises Nigerian governors for what he described as their failure to show genuine commitment.
Umunachi, Nigeria – The iNews Times | Amucheazi criticises Nigerian governors as the first Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Elochukwu Amucheazi, lamented what he described as the lack of interest among state governors in addressing the current challenges facing the country.
Speaking on the state of leadership in the country, the former NOA chief said many governors were more concerned about enriching themselves with public funds rather than addressing the needs of the Nigerian people.
The remarks came when the management and staff of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), led by the Acting State Director in Anambra State, Barrister Lady Ifeoma Chijioke, paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Umunachi Community in Dunukofia Local Government Area.
During the visit organised to celebrate him, Amucheazi criticises Nigerian governors for what he described as their failure to show genuine commitment to the welfare of citizens and the development of the country.
“No Nigerian governor is interested in what is happening in the country today. They are after enriching themselves with public funds to the detriment of the Nigerian masses,” he said.
Reflecting on his experience during his time in Abuja as Director-General of the agency, Amucheazi, a professor of political science, also expressed concern about the current state of the National Orientation Agency.
According to him, the agency that was created to promote national values and civic responsibility is currently facing serious challenges.
He said the agency was passing through difficult times and required renewed efforts from its leadership and staff to restore public confidence in its mandate.
The former NOA boss further noted that many Nigerians were currently facing difficult economic and social conditions, stressing that the agency had a major responsibility in helping to rebuild national consciousness and restore hope among citizens.
He urged the leadership of the agency to intensify its activities across the country in order to re-engineer public confidence and prevent what he described as a possible collapse of national values.
Amucheazi emphasised that strengthening civic awareness and national orientation was critical to addressing the country’s broader governance and development challenges.
Responding during the visit, Acting State Director of the NOA in Anambra State, Barrister Lady Ifeoma Chijioke, showered encomiums on the former Director-General.
She described him as a rare gem and a committed human capital developer whose contributions to national development remain remarkable.
According to her, the agency remains grateful for his dedication to public service and his contributions to strengthening national orientation at the grassroots level.
“NOA cannot thank you enough for your obvious contributions not only to the development of the country but also to humanity at large, especially at the grassroots,” she said.
Chijioke also prayed for God’s continued blessings upon Amucheazi as he continues to contribute to the holistic development of the country and humanity.
Also speaking during the visit, the immediate past State Director of the agency, Mr. Edozie Ajaegbu, commended the initiative behind the visit.
He expressed happiness to be part of what he described as a historic moment for the agency.
Ajaegbu said the visit served as an opportunity to recognise the contributions of a leader who played a major role in shaping the early direction of the National Orientation Agency.
On his part, the Deputy Director, Civic, Values and Democracy Education, Mr. Remigius Obi, disclosed that the agency in Anambra State had continued to engage residents, particularly at the grassroots.
According to him, the agency has been encouraging citizens to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
He said the initiative was part of ongoing civic education efforts aimed at ensuring that eligible Nigerians participate actively in the democratic process.
Obi explained that through such engagements, the agency hopes to strengthen civic responsibility and encourage citizens to exercise their voting rights during elections.
