BENUE, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Gunmen have reportedly killed at least four people, several women brutally assaulted, and another person declared missing following an attack by suspected herdsmen on Udei and Nzorov communities in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State.
The victims were reportedly gathering firewood at Tse Nyamkume Village along the Yogbo-Udei Road on Monday evening when the assailants struck. They were returning to Udei, where they had sought refuge after fleeing their home communities due to escalating violence.
A source said Kenneth Gbayier, a native of Mbalagh, was among those attacked. He was accompanied by another young man from Saawuan Gboodo Village and several women when armed attackers ambushed them. Gbayier was shot and repeatedly hacked with machetes on his legs and head, succumbing to the brutal assault.
“The gunmen opened fire and then attacked them with machetes. Kenneth did not survive,” the source said.
The women were reportedly captured and severely tortured, while the second young man escaped into the nearby bush. His whereabouts remain unknown.
The source called on security agencies to intervene urgently to prevent further escalation and warned residents of Udei and surrounding communities to exercise extreme caution, noting that movement along bush paths and rural routes has become increasingly dangerous due to persistent attacks.
