…residents of Ikorodu insist on urgent action, warning that the prolonged blackout continues to take a heavy toll.
LAGOS, NIGERIA- The iNews Times| Residents of Maya Olorijo Estate in Ikorodu staged a peaceful protest on Monday over a prolonged power outage that has lasted for about 18 months.
The demonstrators, including landlords and youths, marched to the Ikeja Electric Business District in Alogba, carrying placards and chanting to highlight the hardship caused by the extended blackout.
Protesters said the situation has disrupted economic activities, weakened livelihoods, and exposed residents to security risks, with many now relying heavily on fuel-powered generators.
Chairman of the community development association, Victor Ologhobo, explained that the crisis began after a faulty transformer was removed by Ikeja Electric on January 13, 2025, for repairs but has yet to be returned.
“We are not asking for too much, either repair and return our transformer or provide a new one,” he said, noting that businesses have struggled to survive amid rising fuel costs and insecurity.
In response, the Ikorodu Business Manager of Ikeja Electric, Emmanuel Iberuche, apologised for the delay, attributing it to administrative and procedural bottlenecks.
He assured Ikorodu residents that their complaints would be escalated to the company’s headquarters, while the Head of Technical Unit, Samuel Odukoya, stated that installation would be carried out at no cost once approval is granted.
Despite the assurances, residents of Ikorodu insist on urgent action, warning that the prolonged blackout continues to take a heavy toll on their daily lives and economic survival.
