ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has expressed its approval of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent clarification regarding the Supreme Court ruling that ended Julius Abure’s tenure as party National Chairman.
The announcement came following a recent NWC meeting in Abuja, where the committee also extended best wishes to Mr. Peter Obi in his future political endeavors with his new party. The NWC formally endorsed the Abia State Governor as the Labour Party’s new National Leader.
Reaffirming its unity and resolve, the Labour Party emphasized that it remains indivisible, indissoluble, and committed to its mission of fostering a Nigeria based on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance. The party also reiterated its intention to closely monitor political developments nationwide, maintaining its status as an independent, ideologically driven political organization.
The NWC welcomed INEC’s January 7, 2026, press release, describing it as providing institutional clarity. The release reaffirmed the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which declared that Julius Abure’s tenure as National Chairman had expired. In line with this, the Labour Party leadership urged INEC to formally recognize Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha in their respective roles as National Chairman and National Secretary, in strict adherence to the Supreme Court ruling and applicable laws.
The party also expressed gratitude to its members and Nigerians for their continued support and confidence, urging citizens to participate in the ongoing membership registration and revalidation exercise aimed at building a nationwide membership base of 10 million.
The NWC further emphasized that all congresses and the National Convention will proceed in strict accordance with the Labour Party Constitution, encouraging members at all levels to actively engage in these processes. Leadership remains committed to ensuring that congresses are transparent, credible, and inclusive.
Recognizing the recent interest shown by several individuals to contest for elective positions under the party’s platform, the NWC highlighted that this reflects growing public confidence in the Labour Party.
The meeting, chaired by Interim National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, was convened in line with the Labour Party Constitution (2019, as amended) during a period of heightened political activity ahead of upcoming congresses and the National Convention. Members of the National Working Committee were in attendance.
