Nigerian Air Force confirms no survivors after routine Benin-to-Lagos mission ends in tragedy near Igbokoda.

ABUJA, Nigeria — The iNews Times | The Nigerian Air Force https://airforce.mil.ng has confirmed that an NAF aircraft crash in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State claimed the lives of all 25 people on board, marking one of the service’s darkest moments in recent years.

The ATR-42 aircraft, registered as NAF 931, was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when it went down. Five crew members and 20 passengers were aboard. Search-and-rescue operations, launched immediately and coordinated with relevant authorities, found no survivors.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

Military aviation in Nigeria carries inherent risks, from ageing fleets to the demands of internal security operations across difficult terrain. The NAF ATR-42 has long served transport and logistics roles. This particular flight was described by the Air Force as routine, yet the sudden loss of an entire aircraft and everyone on board has once again focused national attention on safety protocols, maintenance standards, and the human cost of service. Families of the fallen, colleagues across the armed forces, and the wider public are left grappling with the sudden void created by the NAF aircraft crash.

Key Developments

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, the Nigerian Air Force confirmed the full casualty figure. NAF 931 carried five crew members and 20 passengers. Search-and-rescue procedures were activated at once, yet every person on board perished.

The crew comprised Squadron Leader MI Aburime as Flight Captain, Squadron Leader AP Man-Ugwueje and Flight Lieutenant IS Bako as co-pilots, together with Warrant Officer Abubakar A and Corporal Uguru HC serving as aircraft technicians.

Among the passengers were Flight Lieutenant TL Lazarus, Flight Lieutenant M Akinloye, Flying Officer IM Adeshina, Master Warrant Officer Onwuka F, Master Warrant Officer Matini BA, Warrant Officer Nuhu FS, Flight Sergeant James RB, Flight Sergeant Mohammed AI, Sergeant Ani AE, Sergeant Izibenikien SI, Sergeant Alafuka C, Sergeant Mbadugha AN, Lance Corporal Ugwuba FC and Lance Corporal Eledan GE. Civilian passengers included Mrs Ezeh Nneka, Godstmine Tarabina, Joy Micheal, Sunday Micheal, Ukeme David and Gideon Omotola.

Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the precise circumstances of the NAF aircraft crash. A condolence register has been opened at NAF headquarters in Abuja for government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, heads of security agencies and other well-wishers.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Air Marshal Aneke described the incident as “a deeply painful moment for the Nigerian Air Force and the nation.” He assured the bereaved families of the Service’s full support and expressed heartfelt condolences to relatives, colleagues and loved ones of the victims.

The Air Force urged the public to refrain from speculation and the circulation of unverified information, stressing the need to respect the privacy and dignity of the affected families while official inquiries continue.

Implications

The loss of 25 lives in a single NAF aircraft crash carries weight far beyond the immediate tragedy. It removes experienced aircrew and technical specialists from an already stretched force, raises fresh questions about aircraft airworthiness and operational readiness, and places renewed pressure on defence authorities to demonstrate transparent accountability. For the families, the sudden absence of spouses, parents and children creates lasting personal and economic hardship. Nationally, the incident underscores the human price of maintaining air mobility in a country confronting multiple security challenges.

What Happens Next

Investigators will examine flight data, maintenance records, weather conditions and operational decisions surrounding the mission. The Nigerian Air Force has pledged to release timely and verified updates as the probe advances. Families will receive continued support from the Service, while the condolence register at headquarters remains open for formal tributes. Further official statements are expected once preliminary findings become available.

Conclusion

The NAF aircraft crash near Igbokoda has left the Nigerian Air Force and the nation in mourning. Twenty-five lives, military and civilian, were extinguished in a single routine flight. As the investigation unfolds and families begin the long process of grief, the episode stands as a solemn reminder of the risks borne daily by those who serve. The iNews Times will continue to follow developments and bring readers accurate, verified reporting on this unfolding story.
