ONITSHA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Calm has been restored to the Onitsha Main Market following a disturbing incident earlier today that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to several others.
The Anambra State Government confirmed the unfortunate demise of Miss Chinwe Igwe, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Her body has since been deposited in the morgue for autopsy and preservation. Meanwhile, other victims of the incident are receiving medical attention and are said to be responding to treatment.
In a swift response to the chaos, law enforcement agents moved in and successfully restored order. The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, in a statement issued on Monday, said that patrols and surveillance have since been intensified in the area to ensure sustained peace and to prevent a recurrence.
“Mr. Governor has directed that the suspects involved in the violence be immediately arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution,” the statement read. “He also mandated that the medical needs of those who sustained injuries be promptly attended to.”
The state government assured the public that a full investigation is underway to uncover the cause of the disruption and to hold all responsible parties accountable.
“As a government, we will not tolerate any breakdown of law and order, especially in our major markets. Appropriate measures are being taken to ensure this never happens again,” Dr. Mefor added.
Normal activities have gradually resumed in the market, as the police continue monitoring efforts to guarantee the safety of traders and shoppers alike.
