Reckless driver kills pedestrian in Lagos

…the vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high speed when it struck the pedestrian walkway.

The iNews Times reports that a devastating incident occurred on Sunday morning at Mosalasi Roundabout, New Ipaja Road, Lagos, resulting in the loss of a female pedestrian’s life.

A black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV was involved in a lone accident after the driver lost control and veered off the road.

The vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high speed when it struck the pedestrian walkway, causing fatal injuries to the woman.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the impact was severe, and the pedestrian died instantly.

The collision also caused significant damage to a nearby private premises engaged in the sale of livestock, where the vehicle crashed into the perimeter fence and an adjoining advertising billboard.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the driver attempted to flee after realizing the gravity of the incident but was quickly apprehended by LASTMA officials.

He was subsequently handed over to officers from the Gowon Estate Police Division for further investigation.

LASTMA confirmed that the remains of the deceased woman were relinquished to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for requisite procedures.

The driver is currently in police custody, undergoing rigorous interrogation as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of life and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Bakare-Oki in a statement on Sunday described the incident as a “deeply sorrowful occurrence” that underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving. He urged motorists to subject their vehicles to routine safety checks, emphasizing the importance of braking systems and adherence to traffic regulations.

“We mourn with the family of the deceased and pray earnestly that the Almighty grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” Bakare-Oki said.

“Adherence to traffic regulations is not merely a legal obligation but a moral imperative to safeguard lives and property on Lagos roads.”

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving.

As the investigation continues, the community comes together to mourn the loss of life and advocate for safer roads.
