Police Arrest Ringleader in Ogidi, Seize Pump-Action Guns

…the police arrest ringleader operation led officers to the gang’s hideout in Ogidi.

AWKA, Nigeria — The iNews Times | In a major security breakthrough, the Anambra Police Arrest Ringleader of a suspected criminal syndicate in Ogidi, Anambra State, alongside two other suspects, recovering a cache of firearms and tactical equipment during the operation.

The arrest was carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, following sustained intelligence gathering and interrogation, according to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga.

Ikenga disclosed that the suspect, identified as Chukwuka Anene, aged 46, confessed to being the armourer of the gang a critical role that allegedly involved sourcing, maintaining, and distributing weapons for the syndicate.

“The Anambra State Police Command has recorded further breakthroughs following sustained investigation and interrogation,” Ikenga said.

“The operatives made additional progress with the arrest of the suspected ringleader of the syndicate, one Chukwuka Anene ‘M’, aged 46 years, who confessed to being the armourer of the gang.”

Following the development, the police arrest ringleader operation led officers to the gang’s hideout in Ogidi, where a significant quantity of weapons and other incriminating materials was recovered.

Items recovered include two pump-action guns, two locally made Beretta pistols, five rounds of 9mm ammunition, seven live cartridges, a beret linked to a cult group, and body armour.

Security analysts describe the recovery as a critical disruption of potential violent activities, noting that the seizure of firearms reduces immediate threats to residents.

The Police Command stated that the operation reflects its continued commitment to dismantling organized criminal networks across communities in the state.

“The Command has intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang, while investigations remain ongoing. Further developments will be communicated in due course,” Ikenga added.

Residents of Ogidi reportedly expressed relief following the development, as concerns had mounted over suspected criminal movements in parts of the community.

Although the police did not immediately disclose the full extent of the syndicate’s operations, sources indicate that the group had been under surveillance for alleged involvement in armed and cult-related activities.

The presence of a beret associated with a cult group among the recovered items has heightened suspicions of organized criminal affiliations.

Security observers note that when police arrest ringleader figures within criminal groups, it often weakens the operational structure of such syndicates, particularly when the individual plays a central logistical role such as armoury management.

The Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu has, in recent months, intensified intelligence-driven operations targeting violent and organized crime across Anambra State.

The Command reiterated that proactive policing, community collaboration, and timely intelligence remain central to its security strategy.

“The Anambra State Police Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and urges members of the public to continue to support the Police with credible information,” Ikenga stated.

Community leaders in Ogidi have also commended the swift action, urging continued vigilance to prevent regrouping by fleeing members of the syndicate.

Security experts emphasize that beyond arrests, thorough investigation and prosecution are essential to ensuring long-term deterrence and sustaining public confidence.

The police arrest ringleader development underscores ongoing efforts to reinforce law enforcement visibility and disrupt criminal supply chains, particularly those involving illegal firearms.

As investigations continue, authorities say they are working to track down other members of the gang who escaped during the operation.

For now, the recovery of firearms, ammunition, cult-linked items, and protective gear marks a significant step in neutralizing what officials describe as a coordinated threat within the area.

Further updates, the Command assured, will be made public as the investigation progresses.
