…the 26-year-old armed robbery suspect was rescued on Monday
The iNews Times reports that in a daring operation on Monday, the Enugu State Police Command, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch, rescued and arrested a 26-year-old armed robbery suspect from an irate mob.
The suspect, identified as Anyanwu Izuchukwu Gabriel, was apprehended at about 8 p.m. after a combined team of police operatives from the Independence Layout Division and Anti-Cultism Squad acted on credible intelligence.
According to the police, Gabriel was found in possession of a locally fabricated Beretta pistol, which was eventually recovered from him. His cohorts reportedly fled the scene, and discreet investigations are currently ongoing to apprehend them.
The suspect sustained severe bodily injuries inflicted by the mob and is currently receiving medical treatment.
During interrogation, Gabriel confessed to being a member of the Black Axe Confraternity, a cult group known for its violent activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, commended the swift and collaborative efforts of the police operatives and community members that led to the arrest and recovery of the firearm.
However, he strongly cautioned against mob actions and jungle justice, emphasizing that such acts undermine proper investigation and the delivery of justice in criminal cases.
CP Giwa’s warning highlights the importance of allowing the justice system to take its course, rather than resorting to vigilantism.
The police command’s efforts to apprehend suspects and bring them to justice are crucial in maintaining law and order in the state.
The Enugu State Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplices and bring them to justice.
The command also urges members of the public to continue supporting the police with credible intelligence to ensure the safety and security of the state.
The state’s police public relations officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, anipr, mnisma, stated that the command remains committed to maintaining law and order in the state and ensuring that justice is served in all cases.
