Bright Ngene – Protests Erupt in Enugu Over Continued Detention of Labour Party Lawmaker-Elect

…INEC went on to declare Ngene as the duly elected winner of the election, affirming his victory under the Labour Party platform.

ENUGU, NIGERIA – The iNews Times |Tension has heightened in Enugu State following the detention of Mr. Bright Ngene, a member of the Labour Party recently declared winner of the Enugu South Urban rerun election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ngene, who has been in prison custody for several months after a Magistrate Court in the state sentenced him, has become the subject of public outcry as residents, party loyalists, and civil society groups took to the streets demanding his release.

The political crisis surrounding Ngene began long before his eventual electoral victory. INEC had earlier scheduled multiple rerun elections for the Enugu South Urban constituency. However, the first three attempts to conduct the polls were marred by violence and disruptions, making it impossible to conclude the process.

The fourth attempt, though equally turbulent, eventually produced results. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of altercations involving supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). Among those allegedly linked to the disturbances was the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Hon. Uche Nnaji, who was accused by Labour Party members of interfering in the process.

Despite the disruptions, INEC went on to declare Bright Ngene as the duly elected winner of the election, affirming his victory under the Labour Party platform.

However, Ngene incarceration at the time of the declaration has cast a shadow over the outcome. The circumstances of his conviction by a Magistrate Court remain a point of controversy, with many attributing it to deep-rooted political rivalry.

Speaking to journalists, Ngene’s wife expressed concern over what she described as a politically motivated trial. She alleged that her husband’s imprisonment was orchestrated to frustrate his political career and prevent him from taking up the mandate freely given to him by the people of Enugu South Urban.

“It is unfortunate that while my husband has been declared winner by INEC, he remains behind bars. This is nothing but politics of bitterness. We call on well-meaning Nigerians, the judiciary, and President Bola Tinubu’s administration to intervene so that justice can prevail,” she said.

The protests, which drew large crowds of supporters, saw demonstrators carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Free Bright Ngene Now,” “Justice for Enugu South Urban,” and “Democracy Must Not Die.”

The protesters, who described Ngene as a “prisoner of conscience,” argued that his continued detention undermines democracy and the right of the people to be represented by their chosen candidate.

Civil society organizations also joined the demonstrations, warning that the development could set a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy if left unchecked.

The protests coincide with the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual Conference in Enugu, further amplifying the calls for legal intervention. Many of the protesters deliberately staged their demonstrations near the conference venue, hoping to draw the attention of the country’s leading legal minds to Ngene’s plight.

“The timing of this protest is symbolic,” one of the protest leaders said. “We want the NBA to see firsthand how political persecution is undermining the rule of law in Enugu. This matter is no longer about party politics, it is about justice, democracy, and human rights.”

With the protests gaining momentum, pressure is mounting on the Enugu State Government, the judiciary, and federal authorities to address Ngene’s situation. Human rights lawyers are already hinting at possible legal challenges and petitions to secure his release.

Observers say the crisis reflects a broader struggle in Nigeria’s democratic process, where political rivalries often spill over into the courts, raising questions about judicial independence and the sanctity of the ballot.

For now, Bright Ngene remains in custody, but his case has become a rallying point for opposition politics in Enugu and a test case for the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

As the protesters vowed to sustain their demonstrations until he is freed, many await the response of the judiciary and political leaders in resolving the impasse.
