ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has been released from police custody, two days after his arrest triggered protests across several states.
Sowore confirmed his release in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday evening, thanking supporters for their resilience. “I have been released from unjust, unwarranted & unlawful detention,” he wrote. “However, it is nothing to celebrate, work continues, but I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity.”
Earlier in the day, protesters had gathered at the Force Headquarters in Abuja demanding his freedom, while simultaneous demonstrations took place in Lagos, Osun, and Oyo states.
The police arrested the Publisher of Sahara Reporters on Wednesday after he honoured an invitation for questioning.
According to the Commissioner of Police for the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, the activist was detained for refusing to make a statement during interrogation.
While Sowore’s supporters celebrated his release, the activist maintained that his detention was unlawful and vowed to continue advocating for justice and democratic rights in Nigeria.
