Disregard May/June 2025 WASSCE Cancellation Rumour, WAEC Tells Nigerians

…as WAEC urges stakeholders and the general public to disregard the false report.

LAGOS, NIGERIA – The iNews Times reports that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed as false the widespread reports claiming the Federal Government has cancelled the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In an official statement issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, and signed by the Council’s acting Public Affairs Officer, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, WAEC described the rumour as a deliberate attempt by mischief-makers to mislead the public and cause panic among candidates.

“The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for school candidates, 2025,” the statement read.

The Council refuted claims that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had annulled the examinations due to alleged widespread malpractice and leakage of exam materials. It stressed that the purported statement making rounds on social media did not emanate from the Council.

“Though the source of that information cannot be ascertained, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination,” Adesina stated.

WAEC confirmed that the marking of scripts for the May/June 2025 WASSCE had just been concluded and assured that results would be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.

The Council also reminded the public that all official information is disseminated exclusively through WAEC’s verified social media handles and accredited media outlets, with every press statement signed by its Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.

WAEC urged stakeholders and the general public to disregard the false report.

Earlier in April, the Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, had disclosed that the examination held between April 24 and June 20, 2025, spanned over eight weeks, with a total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools sitting for the exams.

Of this number, 979,228 were male candidates (49.63%), while 994,025 were female (50.37%), marking a steady increase in enrolment compared to the previous year. The candidates were examined in 74 subjects across 196 papers.

Dangut also revealed that about 26,000 practising senior secondary school teachers, nominated by various ministries of education, served as supervisors during the examination period.

WAEC assured candidates and the public of its commitment to transparency and integrity in its examination processes.
