…”it is a collective resolution by our National Assembly members” – Mbah

ENUGU, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | In a stunning political shift that could redefine Enugu’s power landscape, Governor Peter Mbah has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor, in a state broadcast on Tuesday morning, declared that his decision was not taken lightly but represented “a bold choice” for the future of Enugu and the South-East.

“Today, we have made the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and join the All Progressives Congress,” Mbah announced. “This is not a solo decision; it is a collective resolution by our National Assembly members, State Assembly members, executive council members, and over 80 percent of our party executives and appointees.”

Mbah’s defection was not in isolation. His immediate predecessor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, several state and federal lawmakers, and top political appointees reportedly joined him in the move to the ruling party.

Expressing gratitude to the PDP for its past support, Mbah said he was leaving “with no bitterness,” but with a conviction that the time had come to realign politically in the interest of the people.

“For decades, the South-East stood firmly behind the PDP, yet our voices were too often disregarded,” he said. “We can no longer continue to operate on the margins of national influence. It’s time for our people’s voice to be heard in Abuja.”

The Governor described his alignment with President Bola Tinubu as a “visionary partnership,” emphasizing shared ideals of innovation and transformative governance.

“We share a belief that transformation must be disruptive. I see in President Tinubu a leader committed to redefining governance, and Enugu must not be left behind,” he added.

Political observers describe the defection as a seismic shift that could collapse PDP’s decades-long dominance in Enugu State and significantly alter the political map of the South-East.

As Mbah and Ugwuanyi move into the APC fold, eyes are now on how this new alliance will reshape federal–state relations and the 2027 political calculations across the region.
