…“So far, five bodies have been found, but we fear the number could increase because many people are still missing,” the source said.

BENUE, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | At least five persons were feared killed on Tuesday following a renewed attack by suspected armed herders on Ortese community, located along the Igyungu Aze–Yogbo road in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The assault reportedly left several residents injured, while many others were abducted and taken to unknown destinations. Community sources said the casualty figure may rise, as a number of residents remain missing, prompting youths to comb surrounding bushes in search of survivors or additional victims.

Those whose bodies have so far been recovered include Solo Uchi of Tse Hagher, who was killed on his farm; Iorlaha from Orogbo; and Tersoo Uker of Tse Uker, all within Guma LGA. A resident, who requested anonymity, described the scene as terrifying, noting that the attack occurred just two days after a similar incident in Daudu that claimed two lives.

“So far, five bodies have been found, but we fear the number could increase because many people are still missing,” the source said.

It was gathered that Tersoo Uker, one of the victims, was an internally displaced person who had gone to Tse Avule, behind the Igyungu Aze IDP camp, to cut grass for roofing a makeshift shelter outside the overcrowded camp.

Residents alleged that the assailants blocked the Ortese–Yogbo road, launching attacks on commuters and villagers, while also pursuing those who fled into nearby bushes. A youth leader said some victims were shot dead instantly, while others were chased down as they tried to escape.

Several residents were also reportedly seized alive and taken away by the attackers, heightening concerns over their safety. The incident has sparked panic in Ortese, forcing many residents to flee their homes amid growing insecurity.

Community members said the discovery of more bodies in surrounding bushes has deepened fear, with families abandoning the area in anticipation of further attacks.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for comments were unsuccessful.
