Fireworks Tragedy: 2 Killed in Anambra

…“The fireworks exploded like a bomb. Those near the stage collapsed immediately.

ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Fireworks reportedly killed two people and injured several others during a Christmas carnival in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State over the weekend.

The explosion reportedly occurred near the main stage during the event, causing guests to flee in panic for their safety.

The fireworks, allegedly packed in cartons, were intended for disposal at the carnival.

An eyewitness said one of the victims, identified only as Ugochi, died instantly, while another victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

Fears have emerged that the death toll could rise, as several other attendees sustained severe burns and deep cuts.

“The fireworks exploded like a bomb. Those near the stage collapsed immediately. The sound was deafening, and chaos erupted as people screamed for help,” the eyewitness recounted.

A viral video captured thick smoke filling the hall, with many people fleeing the venue while the injured were taken to hospitals for urgent treatment.

Prior to the Christmas festivities, the Anambra State Police Command had issued a directive banning the use of knockouts and other explosives during yuletide celebrations.

Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, stated that the command would enforce strict security measures to ensure residents and visitors could enjoy a safe and peaceful celebration.
