…Prison Authorities said the bread contained substances believed to be Indian hemp,

KANO, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Prison Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Kano have arrested a 20-year-old man, Muhammad Kabir Tishama, for allegedly attempting to smuggle illegal drugs hidden inside a loaf of bread to inmates.

The suspect was intercepted by alert prison warders while inmates from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre were being escorted to the Kano High Court for scheduled court appearances. Prison Authorities said the bread contained substances believed to be Indian hemp, which Tishama planned to deliver to an inmate during the proceedings.

Confirming the arrest, the Kano State Command spokesperson, Musbahu Lawan, said the incident reflects the command’s heightened vigilance against drug smuggling into custodial facilities, noting that similar attempts had been thwarted in recent times.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, arrested Muhammad Kabir Tishama of Hotoro, Kano, for attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into a custodial centre at the Kano High Court premises,” Lawan stated. “The suspect was apprehended during the movement of inmates to court, with the concealed substances suspected to be Indian hemp intended for an inmate.”

He added that the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa, has ordered that the suspect be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Lawan also praised the officers involved for their vigilance and professionalism, reaffirming the service’s commitment to keeping custodial centres safe, secure, and drug-free.

He urged parents and guardians to caution their wards against engaging in criminal activities, stressing that the NCoS remains focused on reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating offenders into society.

The arrest further highlights the determination of Kano prison officials to prevent the infiltration of illicit substances and maintain safety within custodial facilities.
