…their actions violated Anambra State Government laws prohibiting unauthorized revenue collection
ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has arrested five individuals for allegedly engaging in illegal revenue collection in Nnewi.
The suspects, Edwin Okonkwo, Sunny Obasi, Christian Oziri, Christian Chinedu, and Nnamdi Nworie were apprehended while reportedly extorting between ₦300 and ₦500 from tricycle operators at various locations across the city.
While parading the suspects in Awka on Saturday, the AIRS Special Commander, Nathan Obikwelu, stated that their actions violated Anambra State Government laws prohibiting unauthorized revenue collection from tricycle riders and commercial bus operators. He noted that the arrests were carried out in compliance with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive to end illegal cash collections in the state.
Obikwelu added that the state government has strongly condemned the practice and confirmed that the suspects would be charged to court and remanded in prison pending trial.
Meanwhile, The iNews Times had reported on January 24 that AIRS also arrested four individuals in Onitsha for similar offences. The suspects identified as Ikenna Udoji, Kosi Iwobi, Chidera Ogbogu, and one Monday were allegedly caught collecting about ₦1,200 from tricycle riders near Army Gate.
