An Osun State High Court sitting in Iwo has sentenced Kabiru Ibrahim, an Islamic cleric, to death by hanging for the murder of his client, Lukman Adeleke, iNews Times reports.
Justice Lateef Adegoke also found Ibrahim guilty of theft and sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
A statement from the Information Officer of the Ministry of Justice, Opeyemi Bello, said the prosecution team, led by Abiodun Badiora, told the court that Ibrahim was a spiritual consultant to the deceased.
Badiora told the court that Adeleke had approached Ibrahim for spiritual guidance on purchasing a parcel of land.
Ibrahim asked Adeleke to bring the money for an overnight prayer, but after the prayers, Adeleke went missing.
His family later discovered that he was last seen at Ibrahim’s residence.
Ibrahim initially denied seeing Adeleke, but a community member refuted his claim.
During police interrogation, Ibrahim confessed to the crime and led authorities to Adeleke’s remains, which were found with one palm severed.
The prosecution presented photographic evidence and Ibrahim’s extrajudicial confession.
Justice Lateef Adegoke found Ibrahim guilty of murder and theft, handing down the death sentence for the murder charge and seven years imprisonment for the theft charge.
