ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | An early morning fire on Wednesday razed several shops at the Electronics Parts Market in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, destroying goods and property valued at millions of naira.
Although no lives were lost, the blaze gutted about five shops in a one-storey building, destroying items ranging from electrical appliances to electronic components.
The market, situated along a major road, was thrown into distress as affected traders lamented losses they said had taken years to build.
One of the victims said, “I had just restocked my shop twice before the tragic incident happened.”
Eyewitnesses noted that the exact cause of the inferno had yet to be ascertained, though a power surge was suspected.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene and disconnected electricity cables to avert electrocution.
The Anambra State Fire Service confirmed the incident, with Chief Chukwudi Chiketa stating that his team responded promptly to a distress call and successfully contained the fire.
“The blaze broke out around 9 a.m., and our personnel and equipment were immediately deployed. The affected structure is a one-storey building, and about five shops upstairs containing electronics and parts were destroyed. Fortunately, the situation is under control, and no lives were lost. Several other shops upstairs and downstairs were saved,” he said.
Chiketa added that investigations into the cause of the inferno were ongoing and advised traders to take precautionary measures.
“Shop owners should ensure they have fire extinguishers readily available before the arrival of the fire service,” he cautioned.
