…says the Senior Police Officer is currently lobbying for his return posting.

Awka, Nigeria — The iNews Times reports that concerns are mounting over a Senior Police Officer allegedly making moves to secure redeployment to Anambra State, prompting a coalition of residents and civil society actors to petition the Police Service Commission.

In a communiqué issued in Awka and signed by coordinator Ezeudo Monday, the group claimed the Senior Police Officer, currently holding the rank of Commissioner of Police but whose identity was withheld, was lobbying influential individuals and power brokers to facilitate his return posting.

The coalition said the development had generated anxiety among residents, community leaders and civil society organisations who prioritise peace, accountability and professionalism in security governance.

According to the communiqué, the apprehension surrounding the Senior Police Officer stems from allegations that trailed his previous deployment in the state, including claims of abuse of power, selective enforcement of the law and interference in civil matters.

The group argued that although the allegations remain unproven, they contributed to what it described as a climate of suspicion and weakened public trust in the security architecture at the time.

It warned that a possible return of the Senior Police Officer could undermine recent progress recorded in cooperation between communities and security agencies.

The coalition noted that improved collaboration between citizens and law enforcement in Anambra remains fragile and largely dependent on transparency, professionalism and public confidence.

It further cautioned that redeploying a controversial Senior Police Officer could rekindle distrust, weaken intelligence gathering and embolden criminal elements.

The group also urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission and the Ministry of Police Affairs to consider wider security implications before making posting decisions, stressing the need to prioritise officers with strong records of integrity and community engagement.

Additionally, political leaders, traditional rulers, religious institutions and civil society organisations were encouraged to remain vigilant and support efforts aimed at strengthening security without eroding public confidence.

The coalition emphasised that its position was not politically motivated but driven by the need to safeguard peace and stability in the state.

When contacted, a police source who spoke anonymously maintained that the Force remains committed to merit, transparency and public safety in its deployment processes.

Sources indicated that the controversy may be linked to ongoing succession discussions ahead of the expected retirement of the current Commissioner of Police in the state.
