‎…Disu received his first salute as Inspector-General from the Quarter Guard and officers at the Force Headquarters.

‎‎ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, officially resumed duties on Wednesday after being decorated earlier in the day by President Bola Tinubu.

‎His assumption of office followed the resignation of former IG, Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down on Tuesday, citing family reasons. Egbetokun, appointed on June 19, 2023, vacated the position, clearing the path for Disu’s emergence.

‎Upon returning from the Presidential Villa around 4:25 p.m., Disu received his first salute as Inspector-General from the Quarter Guard and officers at the Force Headquarters. He and Egbetokun later proceeded to the formal handover ceremony, which was attended by Deputy Inspectors-General of Police. Egbetokun appeared in a blue suit, white shirt, and tie.

‎In his address, Disu expressed gratitude to the President for the trust placed in him, affirming that the Nigeria Police Force has the capacity to tackle current security challenges. He praised the courage, professionalism, and institutional experience of officers, noting that these qualities have helped the country navigate difficult security periods.

‎However, he acknowledged lingering issues within the Force, including strained community trust, outdated systems, limited resources, and cases of misconduct. He stressed the need to confront these realities decisively to reposition the Force as a credible, people-focused institution.

‎Disu outlined three key priorities for his tenure: enhancing professionalism and modernisation; strengthening accountability and integrity; and deepening community partnership.

‎On professionalism, he pledged to adopt intelligence-driven policing, forensic methods, digital technology, and evidence-based strategies, alongside improved training and equipment for officers.

‎Regarding accountability, he declared zero tolerance for impunity, stating that disciplinary measures would be enforced across all ranks without exception. He emphasised that the police badge represents public trust and warned that any abuse of it would attract firm consequences. He also promised to reinforce internal oversight systems and ensure greater transparency in line with the rule of law.

‎Highlighting community partnership, Disu said effective policing depends on collaboration with citizens and assured that community policing would become central to operations. He urged officers to demonstrate integrity, compassion, and bravery in their duties, while promising better welfare and improved working conditions.

‎He further called on Nigerians to support the police by reporting crimes, engaging constructively with officers, and holding the institution accountable when necessary.
