MultiChoice Plans Showmax Shutdown After More Than a Decade

…to confirm specific date for the Showmax shutdown.

Johannesburg, South Africa — The iNews Times reports that MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, has announced plans for a Showmax shutdown, bringing an end to the streaming platform after more than a decade of operation.

In a message sent to customers on March 5, the company said the planned Showmax shutdown follows a strategic review aimed at strengthening its digital offerings and ensuring long-term sustainability amid increasing competition in the global streaming industry.

Originally launched in South Africa in 2015, Showmax expanded over the years to serve audiences across several African countries, becoming one of the continent’s most recognised streaming services.

While MultiChoice did not confirm a specific date for the Showmax shutdown, it assured subscribers that the service will continue operating for the time being and that no immediate action is required from users.

Parts of the message to subscribers read:

“Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future.

“We understand that this news may raise questions. Showmax subscribers are a priority for us, and we are working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes.”

The company also promised to provide detailed information about timelines and the transition process ahead of the Showmax shutdown.

“We will share further details well in advance, including timelines and any future steps, should they be required.”

MultiChoice emphasized that protecting the customer experience remains a top priority despite the impending Showmax shutdown, noting that streaming will continue to play a key role in its long-term strategy.

“Streaming remains central to our strategy. We will continue to invest in premium content, technology innovation and partnerships to deliver the best possible entertainment experience to our customers,” the company added.

The announcement comes shortly after the approval of Canal+’s acquisition of MultiChoice, although the company has not yet clarified the possible impact of the Showmax shutdown on employees or the alternatives that may be offered to current subscribers.
