…says Anambra Patriots political support movement was not established for financial gains.
Awka, Nigeria — The iNews Times reports that a political support group, Anambra Patriots, has declared its readiness to support and guarantee victory for any candidate contesting elective positions in Anambra State, provided the aspirant demonstrates a clear commitment to good governance and accountability.
The National Chairman of the group, Damian Enekwechi, gave the assurance in Awka during the group’s General Assembly meeting.
Speaking at the meeting, Enekwechi said the Anambra Patriots political support structure remains active and prepared to mobilise voters for credible candidates across various levels of government in the state.
He noted that the group was among more than 50 support groups that worked toward the re-election of Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, during the November 8 gubernatorial election, adding that the organisation played a significant role in the victory.
Addressing members on Saturday, Enekwechi described the meeting as an opportunity to appreciate the 326 ward coordinators for their efforts in helping secure Soludo’s second term in office.
“We believe in the slogan that whoever governs well should be returned. You are our foot soldiers,” he said.
“We were about 56 support groups before the November poll. Many groups were formed mainly to make money from the election, but they were disappointed and have since collapsed. However, we are still standing.”
According to him, the Anambra Patriots political support movement was not established for financial gains but for service and sacrifice.
“For us, our group was not formed to make money but to make sacrifices, financially and otherwise. Our interest is in whoever will offer good governance and accountability to the people,” he said.
Enekwechi added that with another election cycle approaching, the group remains open to supporting any candidate who demonstrates competence and the capacity to deliver quality governance.
“The next election is around the corner. We are still available for any candidate. The way we delivered Soludo, we will deliver such a candidate, regardless of location. Our interest is in character and the ability to deliver good governance.”
The chairman also warned leaders of the group at various levels to take their responsibilities seriously, stressing that inactivity would not be tolerated.
“For our ward chairmen, we will not tolerate laxity. If we find that you are underperforming, we will replace you. We have removed some already. The same applies to members,” he cautioned.
“Our appointments are based on character and competence, not relationships, and nobody is above the law.”
Also speaking at the event, the National Convener of the group, Okey Ezeobi, said the time had come for the Southeast region to begin strategic political negotiations aimed at producing a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction.
According to him, achieving an Igbo presidency would require political collaboration and engagement with other regions of the country.
“Igbo Presidency is not about emotions or sentiments but about negotiations, including the involvement of other sections of the country to ensure victory at the polls,” he added.
