Nkpor Butchers Election Crisis: Youths Disrupt Poll, Destroy Property in Anambra

…ASMATA PG says the Nkpor Butchers Election Crisis would be amicably resolved within the timeframe provided.

Nkpor, Nigeria — The iNews Times | Nkpor Butchers Election Crisis erupted at the Nkpor Main Market hall in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, as angry youths disrupted the conduct of the Nkpor Butchers Association election, damaging chairs, tables, and other items within reach.

The Nkpor Butchers Election Crisis occurred when the youths, suspected to be indigenes of Nkpor, stormed the venue, forcing the suspension of the electoral process. Their actions created tension in the area and nearly escalated into a full-blown confrontation.

The disruption was said not to have gone down well with members of the butchers’ association, some of whom reportedly considered retaliating before the prompt intervention of stakeholders helped to calm the situation.

Key stakeholders present at the venue included the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Chief Michael Obiekwe; President-General of the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders’ Association (ASMATA), Chief Humphrey Anuna; Chairman of the ASMATA State Electoral Committee, Hon. Samuel Ifurunwa; and other officials assigned to oversee the election.

Following the unrest, the Permanent Secretary reportedly postponed the election to next Friday to allow the warring factions, the butchers and Nkpor indigenes to resolve their differences. He emphasized that peace remains paramount in all human endeavours and must be prioritized over any electoral process.

Earlier, the ASMATA President-General, Chief Humphrey Anuna, had stressed the need for unity, love, and peaceful coexistence among stakeholders. He expressed optimism that the issues that triggered the Nkpor Butchers Election Crisis would be amicably resolved within the timeframe provided.

Speaking on the development, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Butchers Association, Onyia Patrick, said the root cause of the disagreement, which is yet to be clearly identified, would be made known within the one-week period. He assured that efforts were underway to ensure a mature and peaceful resolution between the parties involved.

In their separate remarks, former Chairman of Nkpor Main Market, Arum Obianyo, and a trader, Alagu Mathias, expressed hope that the crisis would be resolved within the stipulated time. They urged all parties to embrace peace and dialogue in order to move forward and prevent further disruption of market activities.

The Nkpor Butchers Election Crisis highlights the need for stronger conflict resolution mechanisms within market associations and greater collaboration between community stakeholders to ensure peaceful conduct of elections in commercial hubs.

Stakeholders have continued to call for calm as efforts intensify to restore order and ensure that the rescheduled election is conducted in a peaceful and transparent atmosphere.
