ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The Police Officer Threatens to Kill controversy has triggered widespread outrage across social media after a man identified as Newton Isokpehi, who claimed to be a serving officer in the Nigerian Police Force https://www.npf.gov.ng, appeared in a viral video threatening to shoot anyone who records him while on duty.

The disturbing clip, which surfaced online on Wednesday, showed the man issuing graphic threats in Pidgin English against members of the public and even senior police authorities he accused of encouraging civilians to film officers during operations.

In this report, The iNews Times examines the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications of the unfolding controversy.

Background of the Story

Public scrutiny of police conduct in Nigeria has remained intense in recent years, especially following repeated allegations of brutality, abuse of power, and excessive force by some officers.

The issue of citizens recording police activities has also become increasingly sensitive, particularly in the era of smartphones and social media, where videos often serve as evidence in cases involving alleged misconduct.

The latest Police Officer Threatens to Kill incident has reignited debates about accountability within the Nigerian Police Force and the mental and emotional condition of officers operating under difficult conditions.

Key Developments

In the viral video, Newton Isokpehi claimed he had served in the Nigerian Police Force for 26 years and warned that anyone who attempted to record him while carrying out official duties risked deadly consequences.

He further threatened any superior officer allegedly responsible for authorizing the public to film police personnel during operations.

“Any day I’m on duty as a police officer, carrying my rifle and doing my job, let somebody come and video me,” he said in the clip.

He went on to issue more graphic threats, declaring that he could “clear everybody down” if approached with a camera while armed and on duty.

The video also showed him displaying what he described as bullet wounds and gunshot scars on his body, which he used to illustrate the hardship and dangers faced by officers in active service.

Our correspondent traced a TikTok account identified as “Newton isokpehi for life” with the username #actor459, where multiple videos showing the man in police uniform were uploaded alongside personal content.

Although the controversial clip was later deleted, the account remained active at the time this report was filed.

The iNews Times could not independently verify whether Isokpehi is currently an active member of the Nigerian Police Force.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Public reaction to the Police Officer Threatens to Kill video was swift and strongly critical, with many Nigerians describing the comments as dangerous, reckless, and unprofessional.

Several social media users argued that the statements reinforced concerns about unchecked aggression among some security personnel.

Others, however, pointed to the officer’s references to poor welfare, untreated trauma, and years of exposure to violence as signs of deeper institutional problems within the police system.

During the video, Isokpehi lamented the conditions officers endure, claiming many policemen suffer despite years of dangerous service.

“We are just working. Monkey dey work, baboon dey chop,” he said while pointing to scars on his body.

He also acknowledged recent efforts by the current Inspector General of Police to address delayed insurance and death benefits owed to officers and their families.

As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the video or the officer’s claims.

Implications

The Police Officer Threatens to Kill incident has raised serious questions about discipline, mental health support, and oversight within Nigeria’s policing system.

Security analysts say the viral threats could deepen public distrust in law enforcement agencies, especially at a time when citizens increasingly rely on recordings to document encounters with security operatives.

The controversy also highlights the growing tension between police accountability and operational sensitivity in a digital age where nearly every public interaction can be captured on camera.

If left unaddressed, observers warn the incident could further damage public confidence in ongoing police reform efforts.

What Happens Next

Attention is now focused on the Nigerian Police Force, which is expected to clarify whether the man in the video is an active officer and whether disciplinary action will follow.

Human rights advocates and civil society groups are also likely to demand investigation into the threats captured in the footage.

As the Police Officer Threatens to Kill controversy continues trending online, pressure is mounting on police authorities to respond publicly and reassure citizens over issues of accountability and public safety.

Conclusion

The viral Police Officer Threatens to Kill video has once again exposed the fragile relationship between law enforcement and the Nigerian public. While the officer’s remarks have drawn condemnation, they have also opened wider conversations about police welfare, operational trauma, and the urgent need for institutional reform.

The iNews Times will continue to monitor developments as authorities respond to the growing controversy.
