Fear spreads across Kwara communities as armed assailants invade prayer ground and launch deadly attack on worshippers.

ILORIN, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Kwara worshippers attack has once again raised fresh security concerns in the North-Central state after armed assailants reportedly killed three worshippers and abducted 15 others during a violent raid on a prayer ground in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The deadly incident occurred on Saturday night at Ori-Oke Ajaiye, situated on the outskirts of Ikiran Village in the Ikerin/Ajuba axis, where members of a religious congregation had gathered for a night vigil before gunmen stormed the location and opened fire.

The attack has triggered panic across nearby rural communities, with residents reportedly fleeing into surrounding bushes while families desperately searched for missing relatives through the night.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

Kwara State, particularly communities within Kwara South, has witnessed increasing attacks on rural settlements, worship centres, and isolated villages in recent months, heightening fears over the growing activities of armed criminal groups operating through forest corridors.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that the vast forest boundaries linking parts of Kwara to neighbouring states have become vulnerable routes for kidnappers, armed gangs, and suspected terrorists seeking remote hideouts and escape paths.

The latest Kwara worshippers attack also comes amid lingering anxiety from previous assaults on churches and prayer grounds across Ekiti and Ifelodun local government areas, incidents that have left many rural residents living in fear.

In November 2025, gunmen attacked the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun, in Eruku, Ekiti LGA, killing three worshippers and abducting 38 others before security operatives later secured the victims’ rescue after a major operation.

Another attack occurred in March 2026 at an ECWA church https://ecwaglobal.org in Omugo, Ifelodun LGA, where eleven worshippers were abducted. Although three victims were rescued during a joint security intervention, eight others reportedly remained in captivity as of press time.

Key Developments

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the latest incident in a statement issued on Sunday by police spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, described the attack as gruesome, barbaric, and completely unacceptable.

Police disclosed that the attack was first reported by Pastor Adebayo Abiodun of Ijo Ajaye Ati Igbala, Ekerin Village, who was leading worshippers during a night vigil when the gunmen invaded the prayer ground.

Authorities said the assailants fired sporadically upon arrival, causing confusion as worshippers and villagers attempted to escape the scene.

A resident who spoke anonymously due to security fears described the atmosphere during the attack as chaotic and terrifying.

“People were running in different directions because of the gunshots. Some families could not even find their relatives until this morning,” the resident reportedly said.

Police confirmed that three worshippers lost their lives during the assault, while 15 others were abducted and taken to an unknown destination by the attackers.

The Commissioner of Police further revealed that operatives attached to the Ekiti Division were immediately deployed after the distress report was received.

According to the command, a coordinated rescue operation involving the Police Mobile Force, intelligence units, drone surveillance teams, and other tactical assets has now been launched to track the attackers and rescue the kidnapped victims.

The iNews Times gathered that security agencies have intensified bush combing operations across forests and isolated settlements within the affected axis as part of efforts to prevent the gunmen from relocating victims to deeper hideouts.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Reacting to the incident, CP Adekimi Ojo assured residents that the police command remained fully committed to restoring security and ensuring the rescue of all abducted worshippers.

“The command is fully committed to ensuring the rescue of all victims and the apprehension of the perpetrators behind the heinous act,” the police commissioner stated.

He also urged residents to remain calm while supporting security agencies with credible intelligence capable of aiding ongoing operations.

Community leaders and residents in affected areas have meanwhile expressed growing frustration over recurring attacks on worship centres, farms, and villages in the region.

Some local stakeholders warned that continued insecurity in rural communities could worsen displacement, disrupt economic activities, and deepen fear among residents already struggling with difficult living conditions.

Security analysts have also called for stronger collaboration between local vigilantes, conventional security agencies, and community intelligence networks to curb the repeated attacks across remote settlements.

Implications

The latest Kwara worshippers attack underscores the widening security challenges confronting rural communities in several parts of Nigeria, where armed groups increasingly target isolated religious gatherings and vulnerable settlements.

Analysts believe the repeated assaults on worship centres may further heighten fear among religious communities and force many residents to avoid night vigils and remote prayer grounds.

The attack also raises fresh questions about surveillance gaps in forested regions and the operational capabilities of criminal networks exploiting difficult terrains to evade arrest.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, security experts warn that persistent attacks could undermine public confidence in safety measures and place additional pressure on law enforcement agencies already battling kidnapping and banditry across multiple regions.

What Happens Next

Security operations are expected to continue in the coming days as police authorities intensify efforts to locate the abducted victims and dismantle the criminal network behind the attack.

Investigators are also likely to expand intelligence gathering within surrounding communities and forest routes believed to serve as escape corridors for armed groups operating in the area.

Residents across Ekiti LGA and neighbouring communities are meanwhile expected to remain on heightened alert as authorities strengthen patrols and surveillance operations.

Conclusion

The deadly attack on worshippers at Ori-Oke Ajaiye has once again highlighted the fragile security situation confronting many rural communities in Kwara State. With families mourning the loss of loved ones and others anxiously awaiting the rescue of abducted victims, pressure is mounting on security agencies to deliver swift results and prevent another tragedy.

As investigations and rescue efforts continue, the incident stands as another painful reminder of the growing threat posed by armed criminal groups targeting vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
