Background of the Story

Security around custodial facilities https://www.corrections.gov.ng has become a growing concern nationwide amid rising cases of jailbreaks and coordinated attacks on correctional centres in different parts of the country.

Although Akwa Ibom has not recorded high-profile prison attacks in recent years, security agencies have remained on alert, particularly as criminal networks increasingly target critical infrastructure.

The attempted breach at the Ikot Ekpene custodial centre now raises fresh concerns about the evolving tactics of criminal elements.

Key Developments

In a statement issued late Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the command disclosed that upon receiving the intelligence, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical units.

A coordinated search and sweep operation was subsequently carried out within the facility.

According to the police, operatives recovered two 90mm high explosive rounds, a 45-centimetre length of burning fuse, a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a six-centimetre conduit iron pipe.

Authorities described the items as capable of causing extensive damage if detonated within the custodial environment.

DSP John stated that the EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, neutralising any imminent threat and preventing potential loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure.

Following the recovery, security was reinforced around the correctional facility and its environs, with increased surveillance, stricter access control, and sustained patrols.

The command also confirmed that discreet investigations and technical analysis have commenced to trace the origin of the explosives and apprehend all individuals connected to the act.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, reassured residents that the situation was fully under control and that no casualties were recorded.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or items to security agencies.

“The Command will not tolerate any attempt to undermine public safety or target critical institutions,” he warned, stressing that Akwa Ibom State remains hostile to crime and criminality.

Security analysts who spoke to The iNews Times noted that the recovery of military-grade explosive rounds suggests a level of sophistication that warrants thorough investigation.

One retired security officer said, “The presence of high explosive ordnance inside or near a custodial facility is not something to dismiss lightly. It indicates planning and intent.”

Residents around Ikot Ekpene expressed relief that the devices were discovered before any detonation occurred, describing the development as alarming but praising the swift response of security agencies.

Implications

The incident in which Akwa Ibom Police Foil Attempted Bomb Attack underscores the persistent threat to correctional institutions across Nigeria.

Custodial centres house individuals facing trial and convicted offenders, making them potential targets for coordinated rescue attempts or destabilisation efforts.

A successful attack could have resulted in mass escape, loss of life, and severe damage to public confidence in security institutions.

The swift neutralisation of the explosives may bolster public trust, but it also highlights the need for tighter intelligence-sharing and proactive surveillance.

For Akwa Ibom State, maintaining its relative stability depends on preventing such threats from escalating.

What Happens Next

Investigations are expected to focus on how the explosives were transported and positioned within the vicinity of the custodial centre.

Authorities may also review security protocols at correctional facilities across the state to close potential gaps.

If suspects are identified and apprehended, prosecution could serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar acts.

Security presence around the Ikot Ekpene facility is likely to remain heightened in the coming weeks.

Conclusion

The episode in which Akwa Ibom Police Foil Attempted Bomb Attack at the Ikot Ekpene custodial centre represents a critical security success, averting what could have been a catastrophic incident.

While no lives were lost and the devices were safely neutralised, the discovery raises serious questions about criminal networks and their capacity to target sensitive institutions.

As investigations continue, The iNews Times will provide verified updates, ensuring that public safety and accountability remain at the forefront of the conversation.
