RIVERS, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area, Port Harcourt, on Friday granted an interim injunction barring the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, alongside two others, including the Clerk of the House, from forwarding any correspondence to the state’s Chief Judge.
The court also restrained the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving, processing, acting upon or considering any request, resolution, impeachment articles or related documents from the first to the 27th defendants for the purpose of setting up a panel to investigate alleged misconduct against the governor and his deputy for a period of seven days.
The order was issued by the presiding judge, Justice F.A. Fiberesima, following a motion ex parte in two separate suits instituted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
Justice Fiberesima further granted the applicants permission to serve the interim injunction and originating processes in Suit Nos. OYHC/7CS/2026 and OYHC/6/CS/2026, along with all subsequent processes meant for the first to the 31st defendants, at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly quarters.
In addition, the court directed that the interim order and originating processes be served on the 32nd defendant, the Chief Judge of the state, through any judicial staff at his chambers within the High Court complex.
The matter was adjourned to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the motion.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday resolved to press ahead with the impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy.
Also on Friday, the four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn from the impeachment process reversed their stance, alleging that the governor had remained inflexible despite calls for dialogue.
