…theme of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration is “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development.”
To mark 2025 Democracy Day, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu will on Thursday, June 12, deliver a presidential address to a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, iNews Times Reports.
This year’s Democracy Day celebration marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, commemorating 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.
The event, scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM with preliminary proceedings, will feature President Tinubu as the Special Guest of Honour. He is expected to arrive at 12:00 noon, after which he will deliver his address to the joint sitting.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development.”
According to a statement issued by the House of Representatives Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the programme will include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by the President.
This event underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development.
The joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, highlighting the importance of the National Assembly in promoting democratic governance.
The House of Representatives urges all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as a time for reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.
Democracy Day is observed in Nigeria on June 12 in honour of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the most credible poll ever conducted in the country’s history.
The election was won by the late Moshood Abiola but was annulled by the military regime of Gen Ibrahim Babangida (retd).
This event has become a symbol of Nigeria’s struggle for democracy and the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions.
As President Tinubu addresses the joint session, Nigerians will be reflecting on the progress made in the country’s democratic journey and the challenges that lie ahead.
The President’s address is expected to provide insight into the government’s vision for the country’s future and its commitment to promoting democratic values and national development, iNews Times reports.
