…reacting in a viral video on Friday, Jibrin condemned Trump’s remarks as “offensive, undiplomatic, and a violation of international norms.”

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has called on former US President Donald Trump to tender a public apology to Nigeria over his recent comments describing the country as “a disgraced nation.”

Jibrin, reacting in a viral video on Friday, condemned Trump’s remarks as “offensive, undiplomatic, and a violation of international norms.” He maintained that no world leader had the authority to issue military threats against another sovereign nation without due process.

Trump had earlier designated Nigeria as “a Country of Particular Concern”over alleged killings of Christians, while also threatening to deploy US military forces if the Nigerian government failed to curb the violence.

In a strongly worded response, Jibrin said Trump’s words were both disrespectful and inconsistent with the values America claims to defend on the global stage.

“For the President of the United States to come out and say, ‘Oh, you are doing this and we are going to attack you, and Nigeria is a disgraced country’ – this is quite unacceptable,” Jibrin said. “We feel that he should understand the implications of such a statement, retract it, and apologise to Nigeria.”

The Deputy Senate President added that diplomacy and mutual respect remain the foundation of international relations, urging the United States to demonstrate leadership by example rather than resorting to threats.

Jibrin’s remarks add to growing backlash from Nigerian political figures and civil society groups, many of whom have described Trump’s comments as inflammatory and damaging to US–Nigeria relations.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to addressing security challenges internally and called for constructive partnership, not hostility, from global powers.
