Expanded 48-team tournament brings stricter documentation checks as Nigerians face entry limitations.

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES – The iNews Times | FIFA World Cup 2026 visa requirements have been comprehensively outlined by U.S. authorities ahead of the largest tournament in football history, with international fans including Nigerians urged to complete all travel documentation early to avoid missing the June 11 kickoff.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 national teams competing across North America from June 11 to July 19, making it the most expansive edition ever organised by FIFA https://www.fifa.com. The tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with matches staged in 11 major U.S. cities, two Canadian cities and three Mexican cities. The final will be played at the New York/New Jersey venue, while other host cities include Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City and Monterrey.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The expansion from 32 to 48 teams represents a structural shift designed to increase global participation and commercial reach. Spanning an entire continent, the tournament is projected to draw millions of travelling supporters, media personnel, sponsors and tourism operators.

Nigeria, however, will not be participating after losing its qualification slot to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. While the Super Eagles’ absence already limits national representation on the pitch, travel realities may further affect Nigerian fans planning to attend matches in the United States.

A review of guidance published by the United States Department of State confirms that Nigerians are currently subject to limited entry into the United States under Presidential Proclamation 10998, which took effect on January 1, 2026.

In February, Nigeria’s Federal Government disclosed that it had initiated diplomatic engagement with Washington to seek removal from the list of countries affected by recent immigrant visa restrictions. Three months later, there has been no visible change in the policy status as the tournament approaches.

Key Developments

The FIFA World Cup 2026 visa requirements released by U.S. authorities outline several critical steps for foreign travellers.

All visitors travelling to the United States must possess passports valid for at least six months beyond the period of their intended stay, unless they are citizens of countries exempted from the six-month rule under existing agreements.

Canadian and Bermudan passport holders do not require additional authorisation to seek entry as tourists.

Nationals from 42 countries participating in the Visa Waiver Programme may apply through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), which allows short-term visits without a traditional visa, subject to approval.

Fans from all other countries including Nigeria are required to obtain a valid U.S. visitor visa (B1/B2) to attend the tournament.

U.S. authorities have advised travellers unsure about documentation requirements to consult country-specific information available on the Department of State’s dedicated FIFA World Cup visa portal.

The Department emphasised that its visa process upholds the “highest standards of national security and public safety” while facilitating legitimate travel for teams and fans.

FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (FIFA PASS) Explained

To manage expected demand, FIFA introduced the FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System, widely known as FIFA PASS.

The system is available to individuals who purchase FIFA World Cup 2026 tickets directly from FIFA and who opt into the FIFA PASS programme.

The process begins with ticket holders logging into their FIFA.com account and submitting the FIFA PASS opt-in form. Applicants must then complete the standard U.S. visa application process by selecting their country of nationality or residence where they will apply.

They are required to fill out the online DS-160 visa application form, upload a current passport photograph and pay the applicable visa fee.

Once these steps are completed, applicants schedule a visa interview appointment. During scheduling, they must indicate that they are FIFA ticket holders.

If the information provided in the FIFA PASS opt-in form matches the visa application details, the applicant may gain access to a FIFA PASS appointment slot before the tournament begins.

For individuals who received tickets via FIFA’s Ticket Transfer feature, a FIFA ticketing account must first be created. The recipient must accept the ticket transfer and agree to all relevant terms and conditions before becoming eligible to submit the FIFA PASS opt-in form.

However, U.S. authorities stress that scheduling an interview through FIFA PASS does not guarantee visa issuance. Like all applicants, ticket holders must undergo screening and demonstrate eligibility under U.S. immigration law.

Reactions from Stakeholders

“This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase the beauty and the greatness of America. And we can’t wait to welcome soccer fans from all over the globe,” U.S. President Donald Trump said during the tournament draw ceremony in Washington, D.C., where he received the FIFA Peace Prize.

For Nigerian sports writers and football enthusiasts, however, enthusiasm is mixed with concern.

Travel advisers note that while applications remain open, visa eligibility and admission are not guaranteed, particularly under the current proclamation affecting certain nationalities.

Comparative checks on other African countries, including Ghana, show more detailed travel guidance without similar restrictive language, further heightening concern among Nigerian applicants.

Implications

The FIFA World Cup 2026 visa requirements could significantly influence fan mobility, tournament atmosphere and tourism revenue.

The United States will host the majority of marquee matches, meaning attendance for headline fixtures will depend heavily on visa approvals. Countries facing entry limitations may see reduced physical fan presence despite strong supporter bases.

For Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest football markets, limited access could affect media coverage, travel agencies, airline bookings and hospitality revenues tied to outbound tourism.

There are also diplomatic optics at play. Major global sporting events often serve as soft-power showcases, and visa accessibility can shape perceptions of openness and inclusivity.

Security analysts argue that Washington’s firm stance reflects broader immigration and national security priorities, particularly as the event is projected to attract unprecedented global foot traffic.

What Happens Next

With the tournament scheduled to begin on June 11, prospective travellers are being urged to initiate visa processes immediately due to possible appointment backlogs and extended processing timelines.

Diplomatic discussions between Nigeria and the United States may continue in the lead-up to the competition, though no official revision of Presidential Proclamation 10998 has been announced.

Meanwhile, FIFA continues to promote FIFA PASS as a structured mechanism aimed at reducing administrative bottlenecks ahead of the global spectacle.

Conclusion

As anticipation builds for football’s most ambitious tournament yet, the FIFA World Cup 2026 visa requirements have emerged as a decisive factor for international fans.

For Nigerians, the challenge extends beyond missing qualification on the pitch it now includes navigating complex entry procedures in order to witness history firsthand.

The iNews Times will continue to track visa policy updates, diplomatic negotiations and tournament logistics as the countdown to June 11 intensifies.
