…the swift response to the Tsafe bandit attack has brought some relief.
Tsafe, Nigeria – The iNews Times | A Tsafe bandit attack targeting students of the College of Science and Health Technology in Tsafe, Zamfara State, was successfully foiled after troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, working in collaboration with local vigilante members known as Askara, neutralised one of the suspected attackers.
The Tsafe bandit attack reportedly occurred late at night when suspected armed bandits attempted to infiltrate the premises of the college with the apparent intention of abducting students.
The incident was disclosed in a post on X by counter-insurgency and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, who monitors security developments in the Lake Chad and North-West regions.
According to Makama, the suspected bandits approached the school under the cover of darkness in what appeared to be a coordinated attempt to gain access to the institution.
Security sources said the attackers were believed to have targeted students for abduction, a tactic frequently used by criminal groups operating in several parts of northwestern Nigeria.
However, troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, working in synergy with local vigilante operatives known as Askara, swiftly responded after receiving information about the suspicious movement around the school.
The joint security team reportedly mobilised immediately and confronted the attackers near the college premises.
During the encounter, a gun duel ensued between the troops and the suspected bandits.
Makama said that during the confrontation, one of the bandits was neutralised while others fled into nearby bushes to escape the advancing security operatives.
The Tsafe bandit attack was therefore successfully foiled before the attackers could gain access to the students or carry out any abduction.
Security sources noted that the operation was carried out under challenging conditions as it occurred at night, which limited visibility during the engagement.
Makama further disclosed that due to the darkness and the urgency of the situation, the troops and the local vigilante members were unable to immediately recover the weapon belonging to the neutralised suspect.
Despite this, security forces have continued operations in the area to ensure that the fleeing suspects do not regroup.
Following the incident, troops intensified patrols around the college and nearby communities to reassure residents and students of their safety.
The increased patrols are also aimed at preventing any further Tsafe bandit attack or similar attempts targeting the institution.
Makama stated that the prompt response by the troops and local vigilantes helped avert what could have become a major kidnapping incident.
“The prompt response by the troops and the local vigilantes prevented what could have been a major kidnapping incident targeting students of the college,” he said.
Bandit attacks and attempted abductions of students have remained a recurring security challenge in parts of northwestern Nigeria.
Over the past few years, criminal gangs have repeatedly targeted schools in states such as Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina and Niger, carrying out abductions for ransom.
These incidents have raised widespread concerns about the safety of students and educational institutions across the region.
In response, security agencies have intensified counter-banditry operations and strengthened collaboration with community-based vigilante groups to improve surveillance and response capabilities.
Local vigilante groups, including the Askara, often support security agencies by providing intelligence and assisting in patrol operations within their communities.
Security observers say such collaboration has become increasingly important in rural areas where bandits attempt surprise attacks on vulnerable communities and institutions.
For residents and students in Tsafe, the swift response to the Tsafe bandit attack has brought some relief, although authorities continue to maintain heightened security vigilance across the area.
