RIVERS, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | A High Court in Port Harcourt has convicted and sentenced three men, Confidence Kirinee, popularly known as General Illa, Precious Mona and Soniabari Sagha to death by hanging.
The court, presided over by Justice Augusta Chukwu, also found Loveday Legal guilty of belonging to a secret cult group and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The cult’s activities were linked to the killing of a pharmacist, Muenalo Sunday, from Zaakpo community in Khana Local Government Area.
Justice Chukwu ruled that Kirinee, Mona and Sagha were guilty of conspiracy, cultism, kidnapping and the murder of the pharmacist, which occurred on March 5, 2019, in Zaakpo community.
In her judgment, the judge stated that the prosecution successfully proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt. She explained that the evidence before the court, including confessional statements, showed that the convicts, members of the Iceland cult group conspired, kidnapped and murdered their victim. They reportedly beheaded him, removed other sensitive body parts, dumped the remains in a pit and took the head to a shrine in a nearby community.
The court ordered that Loveday Legal spend the rest of his life in prison, while Kirinee, Mona and Sagha are to be hanged until confirmed dead.
Counsel to the convicts declined to comment after the judgment.
However, the prosecution counsel, Precious Ordu, Chief State Counsel at the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, praised the judge for what he described as a thorough judgment that delivered justice to both the deceased and the living.
The widow of the late pharmacist, Pretty Neewa-Sunday, welcomed the verdict, saying it would allow her husband’s soul to finally rest in peace.
