Thunder, Lightning kill cows in Ogun

…32 cows were struck dead when thunder and lightning occurred during a heavy downpour of rain — Police.

The iNews Times reports that a devastating incident happened on Saturday in Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State, where 32 cows were reportedly struck dead by lightning during a heavy rainfall.

The incident happened around noon when a torrential rainfall started, and the Fulani herders in charge of the cows alerted the Baale of Osara, Wasiu Afolabi, to the tragic incident at about 2pm.

The Baale confirmed the incident, saying, “I was at home on Saturday when the Fulani herders at about 2pm came to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows.”

Afolabi visited the scene and saw the dead cows, adding that the matter had been reported to the Aregbe police division and Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, Chairman of Odeda Local Government.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo while confirming the incident said “The Command is well aware. The incident was reported to DPO Aregbe Division at about 13:30 hours on 21/06/2025. He led a team to the scene. 32 cows were struck dead when thunder and lightning occurred during a heavy downpour of rain.”

A meeting has been scheduled with the Fulani herders to determine the next course of action and ensure the incident doesn’t affect community peace.

The local authorities are working to address the situation and provide support to the affected herders, iNews Times reports.
