…Chevening Scholarships aim to empower individuals with strong academic backgrounds.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The British government has officially opened the application window for its prestigious Chevening Scholarships, inviting Nigerians and other nationals with leadership potential to apply for fully funded one-year master’s programmes in the United Kingdom.

Applications are open from August 5 to October 7, 2025, according to a statement released by the British High Commission in Abuja on Tuesday.

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, Chevening Scholarships aim to empower individuals with strong academic backgrounds, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to creating meaningful change at home and abroad.

Speaking on the announcement, Emma Hennessey, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the FCDO, described the programme as “highly competitive,” emphasizing that it selects only the most exceptional candidates globally.

“Chevening’s highly competitive selection process ensures that those chosen represent the brightest and most driven individuals from around the world,” Hennessey said.

She encouraged aspiring applicants to reflect deeply on their leadership journey, highlighting that the scholarship is not just about academic ability but about impact and influence.

“Chevening Alumni use their world-class education, global networks, and confidence gained in the UK to create meaningful, lasting change when they return home, whether by tackling global challenges or impacting their own communities,” she added.

Also commenting, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, urged qualified Nigerians to seize the opportunity and become part of the elite Chevening network.

“Chevening is more than a scholarship, it is a gateway to a global network of leaders, innovators, and changemakers,” Montgomery said.

“Whether your aspirations lie in shaping public policy, launching a business, or addressing global challenges, this is your opportunity to sharpen your knowledge and skills in the UK.”

Montgomery stressed that while there is no ‘typical’ Chevening scholar, applicants must demonstrate passion, drive, and a vision for change, especially in Nigeria’s unique socio-political and economic landscape.

“Our alumni network includes dynamic professionals across diverse sectors who are making significant contributions in their fields. If you have the potential to lead positive change in your community, Nigeria, or globally, I encourage you to apply.”

Prospective applicants are expected to submit their applications online via chevening.org/apply and are advised to review the detailed application guidance at chevening.org/guidance to strengthen their submissions.

Since its inception in 1983, the programme has empowered over 60,000 scholars from more than 160 countries, helping shape a generation of international leaders.
