ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the country from Monday through Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in some northern states.
NiMet’s weather outlook shows that Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba and Kebbi states will experience isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains on Monday morning. The agency also issued a flash flood advisory for Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe.
By afternoon and evening, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected to spread across much of the northern region.
The central states will see cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the morning, alongside moderate rains in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Benue. Thunderstorms with moderate rain are forecast across most parts of the central belt later in the day.
In the southern region, moderate morning rains are expected in Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, followed by widespread moderate rainfall across much of the south by evening.
On Tuesday morning, the northern states will have cloudy skies with sunshine intervals, while isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast for Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa. Later in the day, thunderstorms and moderate rains will move across Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi and Taraba.
In the central region, expect cloudy morning skies and sunshine intervals, with moderate rains over Kogi, Niger, the FCT, Kwara and Nasarawa. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rain will cover Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue and the FCT, NiMet stated.
For the south, cloudy skies with chances of moderate morning rain are predicted in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi and Delta, while light to moderate rainfall will spread across most parts of the region later in the day.
According to NiMet, by Wednesday, Sokoto and Zamfara will experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the morning, along with slim chances of thunderstorms and light rain. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast for Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto.
The central states will begin with cloudy skies and sunshine intervals, with light morning rains likely in the FCT, Kogi, Kwara and Niger. Thunderstorms bringing moderate rain are expected later over Benue, Kwara, Kogi and Niger.
In the southern region, cloudy skies will dominate the morning hours, giving way to moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet cautioned residents, especially in Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe, to be vigilant as flash floods are possible in areas of heavy downpour. Motorists and commuters were also advised to exercise caution on wet roads and to plan travel accordingly as thunderstorms and heavy showers could disrupt movement nationwide.
