KWARA, NIGERIA- The
iNews Times | Kwara State Police Command has apprehended four individuals in connection with the murder of the Chief Imam of Sokunkpan village in Tsaragi, Edu Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, revealed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Thursday, noting that the tragic incident occurred on November 4, 2025, around 9:30 p.m.
According to the statement, the unrest began following the death of a 25-year-old man, Ibrahim Gana, who had been receiving treatment at a local hospital.
After his passing, his brothers, Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana allegedly accused the village Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu of causing his death, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in the killing of the cleric.
Ejire-Adeyemi stated that police operatives responded promptly, resulting in the arrest of four suspects, while efforts were underway to track down other individuals connected to the attack.
She added, “Four suspects are currently in custody, and the command has launched a thorough investigation into the case. We want to assure the public that justice will take its full course.”
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, has condemned the act of jungle justice, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands. He described such conduct as criminal and punishable under Nigerian law.
Ojo said, “No individual has the right to take another person’s life under any circumstance. Resorting to mob action only breeds more tragedy and disorder.
“The command will not condone any form of lawlessness, and anyone found guilty will face the full wrath of the law.”
The Commissioner further urged residents to remain calm and to assist the police with credible information that could help in the ongoing investigation.
He added, “We appeal to members of the public to promptly report any suspicious movements or individuals to the nearest police station or through our official emergency channels.”
Ojo also reassured the people of Kwara State of the command’s commitment to maintaining peace, safety, and order across all communities, especially in Edu Local Government Area where the incident took place.
“The Kwara State Police Command, under my leadership, remains steadfast in upholding professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all its operations,” he affirmed.
