…Atiku Abubakar and other opposition leaders had delayed their official registration with ADC.
Abuja, Nigeria — The iNews Times, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), solidifying his alignment with the coalition-backed party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Atiku confirmed the move on Monday via his X account, posting a photo of himself holding an ADC membership card with the caption: “It’s official.”
The decision comes months after Atiku resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, following a period of protracted internal crises within the party. His move to ADC formalises his long-discussed association with the coalition platform, which he had endorsed earlier as a vehicle for opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Prior to this announcement, Atiku and other opposition leaders had delayed their official registration with ADC, keeping the political landscape in suspense.
The ADC was unveiled as a strategic opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections, with former Senate President David Mark serving as National Chairman, ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi as National Publicity Secretary. Atiku Abubakar’s formal membership is expected to strengthen the coalition’s visibility and influence as Nigeria gears up for the next general election.
